First off, this helmet is awesome and I'm so thankful I stopped wasting my money and bought it. I have three of these for my 2 boys. We had a departure over the weekend and I wanted absolutely to be sure they had the right ones. I'm glad I did. The youngest is right in the middle of the low range at 53 1/2 and the oldest is near the middle of average at 55 1/2. The little one wouldn't even attack the youngest without seriously injuring his ears. Not like "Oh my god, my ears," I ripped it apart with all my might and would really hurt him by pulling it on. There were no tears. The elder could put on a medium, but it was very tight. He looked like a fish with crushed cheeks. I increased their size and everyone was happy. I know how a helmet is supposed to fit and I'm very happy with the security of how they fit in plus sizes. In my opinion the measurements are wrong. Thank goodness I have all 3 sizes. They both fell in the HART downhill park. One of them did a full somersault and landed face down on the fast approach to the rock. Rocks sizes from golf balls to softballs (that size killed him). It went right in your face. 10 feet behind him with no hope of catching him, all I had to do was look. As a father, it was the scariest thing I've ever seen. No scratch on it. The helmet looks like it was in a war, but that's all right. The other son bit him off the jump. Again, no scratch on face or head. Buy a helmet!
