I usually use the manufacturer's firewall systems, but their reliability is questionable given the price. I'm very familiar with using a PC for this task, but didn't want to invest in a large machine that might be running out of ports. Compared to branded firewall hardware, I can easily install software on it and get a lot more bang for my buck! The device does not have a fan, but the case is a large heat sink. The device gets warm but not hot. It's fast! lightning fast! The update time is instant! The BIOS capabilities are just amazing (American megatrends). Just use IODD or CD/DVD (via USB) to install. It can also be a PXE-based installation. Seriously, it only took me about 5 minutes to get pf working. A note: Newer firewall systems from vendors using pf use VLANs to manage switch ports, similar to Cisco 4-port WICs. If you remember, when pf's proprietary firewall was 4860, each port had its own assignment, very similar to those devices. It's much easier to navigate the interface assignment process and, of course, frees up the processor. It also comes with a wall/VESA mounting plate. So yes, I would recommend this device. If you know what you do with firewalls, this is definitely a great option!
