Review on Short 32Mm / 60Mm Aluminum Alloy Bike Stem For Most Bicycles - Mountain, Road, MTB, BMX, Fixie Gear, Cycling - Wake 25.4 Stem (Black) by Matthew Kocur

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Hunk of scrap, good for trying a new stem length from a old long one.

Ok to start the crap show this thing is the poor at best machining. The v didn't cut all the way and on the other side it is way deeper but wasnt sanded. Which lack of sanding is fine but why have the v cut at all? The front of the stem is also really off center, or the bolt holes are off center. The bolt holes are also not all drilled to the same depth which bugs me and coukd have something to do with the bars slipping even with a suspension fork. Weight was light though, which if thats all you care about then buy it. Another thing is this stem has no torque rating for any of the bolts. I torqued them to the standard 6nm and they still slipped really badly. They marred my vintage bontrager bars which I am not happy about. The powder coating is also not great since it has somehow faded in color already after not even a month of commuting. So to say this stem isn't a mountain bike stem since it slipped on a pretty average pothole is an understatement. Nor would I call this a "best bicycle" stem. On the brightside this stem did let me not take a risk on getting a stem length I wont like without a huge loss. So this is good for that. But with the bars slipping even that once concerns me enough to return it, and get some none marred bars. Not great in performance I would recommend spending 15 dollars instead of 10 to not hit a bottom of the barrel stem like this. There is such a thing as too cheap, and I doubt it would survive for very much longer than 3 months. Install was as expected to replace a stem just with 4 bolts. Make sure you tighten the bolt like you would on a car wheel. Which you should start at the top left the go to bottom right then across to bottom left the top right. This is supposed to help put even torque on the bars but that didn't help on this hunk of scrap. I personally am going to get a 50mm instead of another 60 next time though.

Pros
  • worked perfect for my stretch cruiser trike project with triple tree fork
Cons
  • The stem may not be rust-proof, leading to eventual corrosion.
