These detectors have a lifespan of 10 years. By the age of 10, they start complaining loudly and need to be replaced quickly. Unfortunately, this is very frustrating when you are a homeowner and have many apartments. Because like a virus, each of your tenants goes crazy when it starts beeping. And if you haven't carefully recorded which device worked when (which I obviously didn't do), you'll find yourself having to replace it every week, as each of them breaks down unexpectedly, usually at night and at least 20% of the time . Sometimes when the tenant was on vacation, I would be woken up by the neighboring tenants to take care of it. If your device fails, let it blink a little or behave strangely for a month or two before it beeps every 30 seconds. At least there is a chance that the tenant will tell you that something is wrong with the CO detector. And FWIW, I have no idea if it actually recognizes that. They only work when the batteries need to be replaced OR we hit the 10 year mark.
