I'm what they call a 'serious drafter'. I'm not a professional artist, but from time to time I feel an irresistible desire to create something. Sometimes it's an idea or an image in my head that I want to put on paper before it disappears. Sometimes I want to save a precious moment or scene I'm watching. Maybe I'll paint someone's likeness. Or I want to make an original birthday card to give to someone while I'm away from home. I've used sketchbooks of all sizes, from a 5" x 7" book to a giant project notebook I was given for art class. Some were wired; one was a sealed notebook with tear-off pages; the other is bound like a book. They were tied at the sides or pads with a hinged lid. This is my first perforated notebook. I also use a lot of materials. I made drawings with watercolors and permanent markers. I've tried regular and water-soluble crayons. I have painted with charcoal, pen and ink, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, gel pens, etc. My favorite mediums are regular graphite pencils and colored pencils. Lately, however, I've been liking watercolor brush pens and acrylic markers. When I paint I do a lot of erasing and blurring to soften and define areas. This notebook has a nice texture and thickness that allows me to do both with satisfactory results. It's a good weight and thick enough that I can use markers or paint without oozing through. As mentioned, it has some texture, but not so rough that it negatively affects my drawings. And I don't "clean" the paper when I need to erase it. The notebook is a good size at just over 8 x 10 inches. It's about 1 inch thick and contains 75 pages so it's portable and will last a long time. The spiral top allows me to unfold it and work on a flat surface instead of fiddling with an open book. The perforation on the sides is nice as I can rip out the image to give to someone or donate it for an art commission. These pages are suitable for framing as they fit in a standard 8x10 frame or mat. Because the paper is acid-free, the drawing or painting should last a long time and not damage what it is placed on. I was disappointed that two of my sketchbooks had their pages and covers damaged in transit. They were shrink-wrapped and hidden in a flimsy envelope, which clearly didn't protect them adequately from the Mail Monkeys. The coiled wires are soft metal, so they've deformed as well. I was able to fold them in half, but I'm a little annoyed that my new notebooks aren't immaculate. However, at $9 to $12 for two sketchpads, you're getting a pretty good deal. If you draw a lot, this is an economical and practical choice.
