You only need one filter cartridge! :)
I found a used aquarium with a filter and bought this to see if it would fit. I must have measured correctly because it fits great! Then I went ahead and bought a huge pack of these. The day after I changed the filters, I read that they shouldn't be changed unless they're completely degraded (other than charcoal substitutes for fish preps?). Frequent filter changes disrupt the nitrogen cycle in the aquarium. So my 12 pack will last a long time.
