I tested it with my old lab mercury thermometer (in fractions), it's close enough. My problem is that the device won't turn on when it gets really cold! Cold Los Angeles, not Maine or Wisconsin. Left in car overnight (clean, dry etc.) if temperature is below 50F? 40F? it just won't work. Changed batteries and such. When I'm dead I leave it in my pocket for 20 minutes and then it works, even measuring "cold". So this is a quality issue of the product or the toilet, not a design or sensor defect. I should have known it was too cheap to be good.
