The way I learned to solder is different from the way people do it today. I solder with flux to coat where I want the solder to flow. I've used the same can of flux paste my whole life, and it's a deep red-black paste that sizzles and smokes instantly when you touch it with a soldering iron tip. After losing it somewhere, I decided to buy another one. I could only find these, white and Vaseline-like. I tried it today, and while the solder is a little easier to bleed onto the wire, it's not the strong paste I've used in the past. It doesn't sizzle at all, and not only that, it turned the tip of my quality soldier's iron black, which has never happened before because the tip has almost never oxidized and has always stayed sparkling clean. I would not recommend this or any other "white" flux paste.
