It appears to be true etched glass, which is what you want in regards to longevity and function.MAINTENANCE: So far I have only needed to clean the file with the included cloth, so I can't say how well it holds up to an actual wash, but I don't see there being a problem since it is etched glass. This type of material supposedly doesn't get bacterial build-up like other files, but I would still recommend washing it every once in a while.STURDINESS: At first glance it seems fragile, but as far as use goes I think it is pretty sturdy.FINAL THOUGHT: IT IS LIKE NAILS ON CHALKBOARD!Okay, I know that sounds like a deal-breaker, but it's not. You have to play around with your plan-of-attack to find a comfortable method. Once you find the right format, it works wonders.Glass files succeed where emery boards do not - they are long-lasting therefore better for the environment, they do not leave layers of nail for cleanup after shaping, allow for filing back and forth without making the nail fragile, and less effort seems to be needed for quicker results.
