Special Instructor Review

I'm a speech therapist at school working with K-5 students and this game quickly became a hit in my office! Ever since I first introduced this game, students keep asking me if we can play the "lava gameโ€, so it is definitely a great addition to any special needs setting due to the motivating aspect of this game. The goal of the game is simple. : Players pretend the floor is lava and they can only step on colored tiles. On their turn, players spin a colored spinner and must cross tiles to get to the next tile of that color. After each move, a tile is removed to make the game more difficult. If a player can't find a tile that matches the color on the meter, they're out. There are also specially marked tiles that require players to perform specific actions (e.g. spin like a ballerina, touch their toes, etc.) which is great for following instructions. Spectrum was able to understand the rules and participate. Some of my students had trouble staying on a tile when moving to the next tile, so we changed the rules and didn't penalize them for it. Tiles are made of foam and come in a variety of sizes. The great thing about this material is that it doesn't slip on the uncarpeted floor (my classroom floor is linoleum). This game is great for developing planning skills, following directions, and sportsmanship. I've played it in groups of 2-4 and found that it works best with 3 players. With large groups, the game ended quickly because we ran out of tiles faster. While playing this game I would also make sure that players only wear socks to keep the tiles clean. The Floor is Lava is definitely a game that keeps kids moving and engaged. I will take it out often!
