I did a lot of research on RAM compatibility when I was in the process of upgrading the Ryzen 7 (R7) 1700 on my 1st Gen Asus X370 Gaming F-Mobile device and ended up going for it decided. I've used the much slower but reliable Ballistix 2400 DDR4 (4x 8GB) sticks and they've been great, but not 1:1 anywhere for Infinity Fabric (IF) speed. This introduced some sluggishness in some multithreaded workloads. However, I wanted to somehow "praise" my RAM along with my CPU. I was very concerned about RAM compatibility as I wanted to use DDR4 3600 (1800MHz) memory to achieve 1:1 IF clock speed. Yes, the clock could be better decoupled from a modern IF, but I wasn't sure how well it would work on my old motherboard. (It turns out everything would work just fine). I also wanted to upgrade from 4 sticks to 2 for better compatibility and thermal protection. So how did this happen? Brilliant! Since I got the 3800X before I got the RAM I was able to compare before and after going from the R7 1700 to the R7 3800X and then again when I installed this faster RAM. After a few minor BIOS tweaks to ensure the RAM was running at a full 1800MHz, just like the default IF speed, I saw speed increases of about 8% or more in Cinebench R10, and surprisingly about the same speed increase in the superposition test. at an average of 1080p, as this prevents the GPU from becoming a bottleneck. I even saw a small boost in the 1080p Extreme benchmark! Impressive. Anyway, if you're building a 2nd gen Ryzen (3000 series and possibly 4000 series when it comes out, assuming the IF is still around 1800MHz) I think this is the RAM you need to get . If it works on my old mobile device, it should also work on a more modern chipset. In any case, the memory controller resides on the processor chip. I've had RAM installed for a couple of weeks now and the whole setup is consistently stable. Of course, always make sure to update your BIOS to the latest version before upgrading anything like a processor. The three big specs: Crucial Ballistix 32GB (2 x 16GB) RAM at 3600 speeds (this review) Ryzen 7 3800XAMD Radeon 5700X I hope this was helpful. I haven't seen many people talking about installing faster RAM on a 1st gen mobo in addition to the 3000 series.
