My daughter recently got a used 3 gallon aquarium and we finally had to replace the original marine filter. I'm very glad I kept the original filter cartridge as new ones simply don't compare in quality, fit and amount of activated carbon with each filter change. The new replacement filters contain much less activated carbon, thinner material, and a plastic base that doesn't fit as well as the old filter. Apparently this isn't a fake, it's "Marineland is getting cheaper" - the filter mesh is noticeably thinner and the activated carbon content is about half of what our old filter can hold. Although the filter mesh is thinner and there is noticeably less carbon, the filter works as advertised and is sufficient to filter the trash out of the tank. With that in mind, I will most likely not be buying these filters again after we get past them (which will likely last a long time as we wash and reuse the filters multiple times to keep the good bacteria in the tank). After that I'll most likely just buy aquarium carbon separately and cut my own filters to size as it's a lot cheaper and probably better quality than those cheap filters.
