Review on Microplane 45004 Gourmet Black Grater by Jill Lawrence

Large grater slicer

Handy slicer, easy to hold and use, but the food holder leaves big holes in vegetables (like zucchini) and is made of hard plastic. I know it's supposed to protect my hand, but I think they did it more with the thought of keeping it on the slicer than how well it works on your hand and what you use it with. Maybe hard cheeses are okay, but soft veggies aren't as good. Anyway I use it very carefully, it cuts a bit thicker than I would like so I'm looking for another plane again. I think an adjustable mandolin is the answer, but I didn't want to make it too big. I still love Microplane products, they are damn sharp and well made.

Pros
  • Cheese grater: With this grater you can cut slightly thicker cheese than with a zipper blade for garnishing hard and semi-hard cheeses. The wider result is sprinkled well, mixed with salads and served over omelettes. This cheese grater is best for Parmesan, Asiago and other hard and semi-hard cheeses.
Cons
  • Unnecessary features
