So a colleague told me about SDR, had no idea they existed, been a radio amateur for most of my life and I'm hitting 50, USB dongle anyways, on the They can be connected to a computer and used as receivers for almost ALL tapes. as you say, something like that would cost thousands of dollars. less than $30 for a new "toy" that may or may not work. ordered it, received it within a week, the company sent me a message on how to use it as a radio instead of a tv tuner, plugged this little guy into the usb port of my trusty old mac, followed the link and downloaded the cuibtsdr- software. literally aired out of the package in less than 10 minutes. I'm old and slow with software, but even I could transcribe FM tapes in minutes. Seriously, if you want a multi-purpose receiver, this is what you need. It comes with a tiny antenna so you might want to buy a smx-PL type patch cord so you can connect to large antennas. My plans are to connect to a long wire I have and see if I can access KC materials from overseas.
