I'm old, hard of hearing - and it's my fault that I have fond memories of the past. I still remember the old mechanical egg timers that made a rattling noise when they went off and could be heard from all over the house - mine broke a long time ago (springs break eventually) and disappeared. Reviewers of mechanical timers like this are right to point out that they aren't perfect, but all mine have always worked. I bought 2 of these timers and they both work fine BUT they are not as loud as I would like. One reviewer said they were TOO loud, but (and I don't think it's due to my hearing loss) I disagree. Strangely, the advertising for this item doesn't emphasize kitchen use - I don't see why that should affect the alarm volume. However, they are certainly noisier than the battery powered timers I've bought, which invariably only have a beep alarm. And for a few other reviewers who don't seem to understand the importance of rotating the dial 60 and then setting the time to get a nice, long alarm - give it a try. It's not that heavy, although there's no battery-powered button to reduce effort.
