Tried a few of these before giving up. If you search the internet for "replacement coolant cap" or "replacement coolant cap" and "cherokee" you will find that people had the same problem as me with this cap - it screws on correctly . then appears. My guess is that the threads on the tank have warped over the years - and maybe the replacement cap will fit the new, original tank - it just doesn't work well with the old tank that's been sitting in a hot engine bay for years. My old cap still fits perfectly, but it has a tear and I wanted to replace it before I have problems. If you do an internet search you will also find that the cap for the Volvo 940 Tubro fits the Cherokee's gas tank and will NOT come off. Since the Volvo 940 Turbo models were only a few years old they all have the SAME coverage ---- so at the auto parts store I just said 1994 to avoid the hassle of needing the exact year. This is how I fixed the problem on my Cherokee - you'll have to decide if you want to do the same - it's not for the same machine after all, it just worked for me as a solution, as did others on the web - who came across this idea got in the first place.
