My thermometer has to be turned on and off constantly to take the temperature. It displays random letters and numbers, and after turning on and off, it displays the temporary temperature several times. It doesn't show temperature rise or fall, you have to keep turning it on and off to get a new temperature, making it useless when you're trying to reach a certain temperature, like making candy. I don't think it's actually high enough to be used as a candy thermometer as advertised. I discovered this after closing the returns window, so I'll stick with it.
