By raising or lowering the ear cups, this hat can be comfortable in a variety of temperatures and circumstances. Drop flaps protect the neck. The beak is broad and of good length and offers protection from the sun. Obviously it doesn't protect the face like a balaclava in very cold and windy weather. So far I've only been able to wear them in temperatures in the mid 30's, but they were comfortable. OPTIONAL: When the winter wind blew and I looked into the wind, it blew under the underside of the ear cups. I solved this problem with the WetRider Stretchee Cap Strap that I bought from Revain. There are clips on each end of the strap which I attached to the underside of the earcups and then adjusted the strap so the earcups fit snugly against my ears. Worked great. It kept my ears warm and the chin strap was very comfortable.
