Inaccurate pH Test Strips

We purchased these test strips to see if our water softener was performing as expected with our settings. Our builder told us that the water in our area is very hard, so we installed a water softener about a year ago and bought a water softener in good faith. We tested the water from our kitchen faucet and the test strip showed 0 mg. /l total hardness. To make sure the test strips were working, we tested the water from the outside faucet and the strip read 25 mg/L after about a minute. So our fabric softener seems to be doing its job with the settings we have. They're pretty low (we used less than 3 bags of salt in about a year). If you only want a hardness value of 25-50 mg/l. Intervals, stripes should be fine. Of course I would have liked more accuracy as it is quite difficult to distinguish between 25 and 50 mg/l on a color chart. My guess is that this means a more expensive alternative is needed for testing.
