It's been difficult to find an inexpensive battery operated photoelectric fire alarm (responsive to smoldering/smoke, not ionization) fire alarm, but this Chinese-made unit seems to do the check to complete. It's not a super good build (but then it costs a little over $10), but it feels reasonable. I set it up in a small workspace with lots of electronics and a bunch of low voltage charge lead-acid batteries. I wanted an extra level of security but didn't want any false alarms due to ionized gases that would normally be present. My only complaint is that (like many alarms) it comes with a regular 9V (non-alkaline) battery which probably won't last more than 9-10 months before needing to be replaced (so I'll bring my own alkaline install cell). ).
