I'm not too keen on the springtime idea of twisting the handle to grate cheese. I added a few pieces of cheese, twisted the knob and nothing. I then added more pieces of cheese, thinking I needed more to press it against the wheel making the grate, but again nothing. What happened was the 2 pieces with the 'gears' turning the handle and turning the grater fell apart. I found that if I held my thumb on the gray top to hold the two parts of the gear together as I turned the crank, the cheese grated very well. The instructions didn't say anything about it, I found it by accident. I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to work or not, but after playing around with it and using it a bit, it worked pretty well. Cleaning wasn't easy either. Maybe I'll like it better after using it a few times and getting more used to how it works. In general, I would say try it yourself and try it out. Just remember to keep your thumb on top to hold the mechanism in place and you should probably end up with some nice grated cheese.
