Review on Wireless Joey Whole-Home DVR Client by DISH Network by Brian Vasquez

Look out for install/activation issues

The Dish Joey is a great product for adding an independent Dish outlet elsewhere in your home and I bought it here at Revain , it works well. AFTER some time setup violation. Read the last paragraph of this review for technical advice when installing it yourself. I bought the Joey to add to my home system as a second wireless Joey (you can have up to 3). The main problem seems to be that these receivers are gray market items, items that were previously registered in Dish for another owner or user account. As a result, the Joey I received failed to connect properly to my current receiver and I ended up with the device completely locked halfway through the installation process. I spent about two hours on the phone with Dish, first de-registering the receiver and its smart card and re-registering it with my account, then going through various support steps to get Joey to install it to no avail. Eventually, tech support relented and scheduled a technician visit for me at home. However, they gave me a 1 month free "Membership" to Home Tech Support so the visit was free. Now a tech tip: after Dish tech support finished their troubleshooting script and gave up, I decided to give it another try myself. Even though they authorized the receiver in my account, it still refused to connect wirelessly to my "AP" key (hotspot, basically a dedicated Wi-Fi hotspot exclusively for Joey that you already have) . What I did was take the new Joey to my main receiver/TV and plug it into an open HDMI port on my "main" TV so I could see what it was doing. I then disconnected the access point's ethernet line from the Dish receiver and connected the same ethernet line to the new Joey's ethernet port. Note that this line comes directly from a special port on the dish receiver. Wola! Joey immediately connected to the main Dish receiver and automatically started downloading the software and a rather lengthy reprogramming of Joey. When it was finally done, I was able to unplug Joey, reconnect the hotspot, return to my secondary location, restart Joey and let him connect wirelessly (which happened without issue this time), and was able to go through the normal process settings, pairing and programming the remote control and so on. Now I have to cancel the technician's home visit :-)
