Like their other printers (and all-in-ones), Brother has been relatively Linux-friendly for a while. Brother offers driver support for RPM and Deb based distributions. They even provide a script to help you install it. In my case, of course, the script didn't work. I installed the deb files anyway and my printer got installed. I used the ubiquitous system-config-printer program to set up the printer. He found the printer and offered various connection options. I bought this printer to replace another broken Brother printer I bought a few years ago (5450DN). This one, 5100DN, allowed me to set a fixed IP address from the printer console itself. I didn't have to find the printer and then log in through the printer's web server to set the IP address. Next, while loading the driver, I received a pop-up message about an important firmware update for the printer. After setting up the printer, I went to the new printer's web server and discovered another new feature - a firmware update button. I pushed her. After a few minutes I was able to log back in and had the updated firmware. Therefore, this printer is more user-friendly than the previous one. The old printer didn't have the best paper handling. To be honest, I've jammed more times than I'd like to. This one hasn't settled yet. Another aspect I like is that the 5100 prints better. Model 5450 printed too dark at 600 and 1200 dpi. This one is a bit darker at 1200, but 600 is fine. It doesn't apply insane amounts of gamma correction to each image when you're about to print it. If you use Linux and live close to a router, this is a very good printer. December 12, 2016. I'm upgrading that to five stars.
