Review on πŸŽ™οΈ Shure MV51 Digital Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone with USB and Lightning Cable by Mandy Martin

Compare with Blue Spark Digital Lightning for singers.

I purchased this item as an iOS portable condenser device for on the go as transporting my Blue Spark Digital Lightning from place to place was a real drag. On paper it should be a great product with bigger capsule, improved DSP etc. This device is mainly used for vocal recording. It has excellent build quality, intuitive touch controls, and a very comfortable stand. This device is designed for long-term operation and can withstand light loads. However, the recording quality is not acceptable for such an expensive device. When I first took it out of the box and took a dry shot, I was underwhelmed to say the least. After fiddling with a completely unprocessed signal (flat, no compression, no limiter) and applying post-processing, the sound turned out to be dull and muddy. It also picks up a lot of low frequencies (I was about 18 inches from the mic at 26dB of gain) which I EQed, but then a terrible hiss comes in. So I did a test. Raw raw vocals, default settings for my Blue Spark Digital Lightning and MV51. Four of my friends tested it blind and all four said the Blue Spark Digital Lightning was better. The Blue Spark Digital Lightning doesn't offer 24-bit 48kHz like the MV51, but the unit's sound signature is MUCH better for singers. I'd highly recommend buying both devices and returning the one you like better if you're into iOS vocal recording if you're at the limit. I also had (and returned) an Apogee MiC 96k, which is inferior in sound quality to both. Stay away from it.

Pros
  • Automatically adjusts gain, EQ, compression and clipping for optimal results.
Cons
  • Very expensive.
