I'm not an environmentalist, tree lover, animal rights activist or anything - I was just searching for brown and white cowhide rugs and this one popped up in my results and looked just how I wanted it. It met my expectations in terms of size (I was looking for a cowhide rug that would fit in an area less than 4.5 x 4.5 feet) and the picture looked good. I wanted a cowhide rug, mainly brown with some white and touches of black, to place in the center of my new dressing room. Please note - this is not real cowhide leather (this is stated in the description). so there is an inherent benefit of "reproducibility". With genuine cowhide rugs, there is almost no expectation of what pattern you will get on your rug. They never look like the pictures (which is understandable - no two cows have the same pattern) - you are only guaranteed the dominant colors on the carpet. pick it up personally and send it back simply and easily if you don't like it. The texture and consistency of real cowhide leather, but with extra softness. Feels good barefoot, has a very low profile so doesn't get under the closet door when I open and close the door (although I usually leave the closet door open, when opening and closing the area the door goes through overlaps the carpet floor). The top is covered with very short-piled fur, and the lower part is covered with some kind of soft fabric. I wouldn't put it in the washing machine but it should be fairly easy to clean. When you fold it up it takes up surprisingly little space (package arrived in a 13 x 10 x 2 ziplock plastic bag - I almost thought I was wrong Bonus is that no cows died because of this, which is important to some people is, but that wasn't my main reason for buying it (I eat a lot of cows, which are usually dead when their meat is extracted from them, so I can't pretend to draw a line on using their skin).
