Quality matches the price. Sure, a $100 refractometer might be a bit heavier etc., but it's reliable and functional at a very low price. The view through the scope is excellent. Since this thing uses the principles of physics, I believe that after a good calibration it will measure salinity as well as anything else. Mine came uncalibrated but it's okay things break on delivery. calibrate, use. It's good. Every $20 refractometer on Amazon seems to be the same, so I think if you buy the same thing it probably will be the same. I was expecting the case to be complete crap with a molded hinge, but it's actually not too ramshackle and will definitely hold the device securely.
