The RJ45 ethernet port on my motherboard has failed and instead of sending my pc in for repair (and going without a desktop for a month or so) I thought you'd better give it a try a USB port Ethernet adapter. When I saw the adapter paired with a 3-port USB 3.0 hub, I figured it might be worth a try, at least a week or two before the motherboard repairs. The low price made me hesitate. The adapter is advertised as 10/100/1000 and I'm using a gigabit router with a lot of heavy local area network traffic. For $10, I wasn't expecting to hit full gigabit speeds, so I was pleasantly surprised when I did. I didn't actually hit 1000Mbps to be precise, but when I transferred a large file between my laptop and my desktop the speeds were almost identical to what I saw when I switched on the ethernet adapter used my motherboard. I achieved these speeds while also having an external hard drive and microphone connected to the hub. The only downside is the short cable length from the adapter to the USB port, but that's a minor issue, and the adapter itself is light enough that I don't mind hanging from the back of my desktop tower.
