Review on πŸ”Š SVS Prime Satellite Speakers: Elevate Your Audio Experience with Premium Black Ash Pair by Josh Dyer

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Strength in neutrality, weakness in magnitude, better options for the same price.

SVS Prime satellite speakers when used as an upgrade to something like Logitech computer speakers or cheap All-In-One 5.1 systems from box store brands like Polk, Klipsch, Sony, Samsung, Vizio or Yamaha speakers would definitely be an upgrade. However, compared to more "audiophile" brands, I would rate them "meh". They don't sound bad at all, and they're actually quite neutral as advertised (I don't need to EQ the overtly boastful frequencies). However, as others have said, they sound "thin". To be honest, every speaker of this size needs a subwoofer. So if you expect deep bass from them alone, you're wrong. What I mean by thin is definitely small in size, image and soundstage. Several speakers of this size and price range offer a much more convincing soundstage. They work exceptionally well on a near-field desktop at a distance of 2 feet. The neutrality also allows them to sound good and combine well with side and back surrounds in a surround sound system, but they lack the holographic imagery to provide full immersion. On some recordings, the 500Hz midrange can sound tight and, like these speakers, chug and chug out of the rear ports even at low volumes. Not the greatest tweeter detail, but they handle a variety of genres and blend well. The neutral sound is great for many music genres, from jazz to aggressive metal. The overall sonic signature of these speakers actually sounds very similar to the B&W 686 for a fraction of the price. I bought this pair of SVS Prime satellite speakers as well as a pair of PSB Alpha P3s. The PSB P3 is an all round winner for surround back and a full desktop speaker, it should be noted that the PSB P3 has a swollen mid-bass at 250Hz that sounds better when reduced with the graphic EQ. P3 is more fun and exciting for listening to movies, jazz, classical, skate punk, hardcore, thrash metal and death metal. Where SVS will benefit is in neutrality. I wouldn't use either speaker as a studio monitor (look for killer powered monitors from Dynaudio) but if I was in a bind the SVS would have served better due to its very flat, neutral sound. The PSB is fairly neutral but has enough coloration to be used only as a listening speaker and not for honest listening. PSB, Dali, Monitor Audio and Black & White speakers and decide to your liking.
