Review on Enhanced Victron Energy BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor in Sleek Black by Sean Franklin

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Well designed, well made, well worth it.

Newly Installed: It's clear that someone at this company understands human-centered design because almost every aspect of this device is thought through to the smallest detail. The shunt was easy to install. , and has a very clear marking on which side to connect. I managed to fit it in a large battery box (see photo). The strain relief they provide has a real ferrule that inserts into a spring pin on the shunt. I have only seen this part on professional factory machines for processing vibratory joints. This is the right way to do it. Bravo for that. The display module itself is quite solid and well designed. The buttons are intuitive and work the way you think they should. My only complaint is that it's hard to read when trying to create readable text from 7-segment elements. It took me a while to figure out what's showing. It would be better with a dot matrix display. But I understand the cost and all that. The app almost makes up for that, except there's a purist in me who doesn't want a phone on the go. The app is really where this device shines. As a Bluetooth hater, I was surprised at how easy the initial pairing was. In general, just connected and earned. The app is honestly great in its simplicity. I particularly like how clear and concise the information is presented. It definitely passes the 5 second human dashboard test. Great. I can also connect to the device from home if needed. Which is just amazing. More information. The included square frame is great. The quality of the cable is good. On the back there is a connection for connecting another display. This company also published documentation on the protocol, which is a big plus. I'll update the rating as I use it more, but for me this thing is a solid 5 stars. SUPER glad to see a well thought out and well executed device like this. For me as an embedded software engineer, this is the benchmark. It's worth it.
