HDMI output only works when a USB-C power adapter is connected directly to this adapter. If it is connected to the computer separately or the computer is only running on battery power, it will not work. Most of the time, HDMI doesn't deliver video even when directly powered (although the computer shows a connected external monitor) and multiple reboots are required to fix the problem. Disconnecting and reconnecting the device about 5 times usually fixes the problem. When the adapter loses power, it disrupts Ethernet network traffic. So if you're on a FaceTime call, for example, it hangs and your Mac has to reconnect to the network. This adapter also has a blue LED that stays on no matter what and is a clear waste of energy, especially if your computer is running on battery power. Also, I tried this adapter with a Lenovo laptop and couldn't get anything to work properly. The RevainBasics brand adapter works great with the same laptop. Note: All of these issues occur on my 2017 MacBook Pro, which has no issues with other adapters.
