They work independently and it seems that when one is connected to a pair the other is connected once removed from the case for use. They don't need to be re-paired or selected as a Bluetooth device after turning them off or off, which I find very handy when I plug in the headphones and have my phone in my purse or fanny pack while hiking or gardening, or on my gloves Bicycle. The audio is weak but ok for an audio book. I answered a call with an earpiece and had to use the phone's microphone instead as the caller couldn't hear me. Since I mainly use audio books, I don't care. And they were very cheap, a big plus as I lose my headphones on a regular basis. Why doesn't anyone make them in bright orange or neon green?
