I used to think of the bagel slicer as a frivolous cooking tool and an extra gadget that would clutter up the kitchen. Kitchen table. However, after one particularly painful incident, I completely changed my mind. My husband goes to a famous bakery every two weeks and they are famous for their old fashioned New York style homemade bagels. These bagels are big, crunchy on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. I cut them all ahead of time and kept them in small portions to keep them fresh. It only took about 15-20 minutes but sometimes the crispier ones were a challenge for the knife resulting in a crooked bagel. As I cut open the crispy bagel and squeezed the knife lightly, the knife slipped and instead ripped a chunk out of my thumb. As we regularly buy bagels, this scary and painful situation has made me reconsider the usefulness of slicing bagels. If I need to use a kitchen tool that is sure not to be accidentally hit by a sharp serrated knife, then this is not a light purchase. Instead, it's a wise decision and a useful tool. I use this bagel cutter regularly and every two weeks for our freshly made bagels. General Description: This bagel slicer is a good compact size, approximately 9 ¼ inches high, 7 inches long, and although the base is less than 3 ¼ inches wide, it is very sturdy. I like the narrow width that takes up very little space when stored sideways in tight spaces. There are two parts to slicing bagels. The top is the frame that contains the blade and the handle on the frame feels smooth in the hand. , with plenty of room that keeps my fingers off the tip of the blade. I like the design where the entire cutting blade has a clear acrylic body to prevent accidental hand/finger contact with any part of the sharp blade. However, there is enough space in the case for my long-handled cleaning sponge to thoroughly clean both sides of the blade. The stainless steel blade has serrated cutting edges and I love that the blade has a non-stick coating for easy cleaning. The second part consists of a very stable base that will NOT tip over or fall off. It has a triangular edge for a pickled bagel and measures 4 ¾" wide x 2" wide to easily accommodate our large bagels. There is also a large rounded hole for removing the bagel after cutting. There is a flat finger guard under the base that prevents the blade from making contact with anything under the base, including my hand, when moving the bagel slicer from one area to another. In terms of performance, this bagel slicer works flawlessly. The blade is easy to squeeze and cut our bagels right down the middle. It eliminates my crooked cuts, especially on those hard, crunchy bagels. Even with shaky hands and less than perfect vision, there is no longer a risk of cuts. This whole task is a very smooth process that only takes a few minutes to cut a dozen bagels, which is much faster than slicing them all by hand. Microwave it for a few seconds to soften it up a bit. So the bagel cutter will cut the bagels that have gone hard overnight (unless you put them in a plastic bag, which seems to keep them softer and fresher longer). I am very happy with the purchase of this bagel slicer. Its slim design ensures safety as well as excellent performance and easy cleaning. I can't find a single flaw in the design with its carefully thought out details. It is a very effective tool and for me a handy addition to my kitchen utensils.
