They work the same as much more expensive filters, but they're not the only functional and inexpensive option.

I live in Loveland, Colorado where our water tastes amazing most of the time. On the rare occasion that tap water has a slight taste, these filters remove that taste completely. I change the filters every six months because these filters remove Cl2 from the water that needs to be removed for fermentation processes to make sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha. It is also helpful to remove Cl2 from drinking water to protect one's microbiome. I didn't give this product five stars because some competitors have lower price, higher capacity, higher flow filters that also seem to eliminate flavor and work for fermentation as well.
