Review on πŸ“ 19053C Caliper Divider from Big Horn by Brent Mosley

Typical Chinese "precision tool " - NO!

I have to say I wasn't expecting much for the price but I expected them to be better than these. I was initially excited when these spring saddles arrived. They were (thankfully) packed in airtight plastic bags and lubricated with plain old rancid machine oil to keep the cheap steel from rusting in transit. But they were even dirtier than they looked. After wiping off all the oil with half a roll of paper towels, the initial surface finish, although far from a precision tool, was quite good. They cleaned up pretty well, at least until you look closely. The photos show the quality of workmanship on the working parts themselves, the bolt and nut etc. They look like they were cut down in the dark by a guy who only had a triangular file. Poor carving, sharp edges and sanding/sanding marks everywhere. The comments in this review pretty much apply to all three tools in this suite. I just took a picture of the first one while cleaning. They were all of the same (lousy) quality. In each case, the nut dangled in several places along the threads. These screws looked like they had been hammered with a horrible die after threading them in. I had to disassemble them and run a die through the threads to make even the nut go through the threads almost clean. (2 of them literally fell apart on their own when I unscrewed the nut to clear the crap out of the threads.) They work fine now, but the factory threads were just awful. The screw part simply screws into the swivel fitting and unscrews each time I turn the knob before cleaning the threads myself. It is not fixed and not even fixed. It just got stuck there. The second and last photo shows that even with the nut severely unscrewed, the fit that the bolt goes through is so rough that it won't even slide on the bolt to open the caliper. It hangs on coarse threads and does not move. Eventually, if you hit him or move something enough, he'll suddenly pop out at full length. The point under the adjusting screw hits the shoulder of the caliper, not the fitting it's supposed to rest on. Just lousy part sizes and poor workmanship. This will work, but it won't rub well on sharp edges. It is not a smooth-running precision instrument. Again, for the price, you can't expect much, I guess, but I think we have a right to expect them to at least work. I spent over an hour trying to get it to work at all because I didn't have time to send it back and try something else. Luckily the job I bought them for makes the crappy quality a bit out of place. I just needed a cheap set and got it. But I think next time I'll invest in something less disgusting.
