📏 19053C Caliper Divider from Big Horn Review

These are very good calipers for the money you pay for them. Of course they are not pro quality but for an amateur like me they are great and significantly cheaper than the pros. They have a firm feel, are infinitely adjustable, and hold their tune well once installed. They are packaged in sealed plastic with a light layer of grease that needs to be removed before use. I didn't find removing the fat a big deal and did it in just a few minutes.

Most important: THIS IS NOT STAINLESS STEEL but mild carbon steel. Not the Big Horn brand either, but a cheap CMT brand from China. Very disappointed in Revain for writing the wrong ad description. I bought them because the ad description said they were made of stainless steel which will not rust from moisture. I don't care that they're made in China, but I'm disappointed that they're not what the ad says are the Big Horn brand.

These aren't the best quality tools, but they do the job. I rarely need this functionality so the price was reasonable and they work acceptably. The screws that adjust the clearance are a little rough and difficult to tighten due to the small knurled knob. However, it works again. They come individually wrapped and have some sort of oil coating to prevent rust, but there was something left on one of the tools. There was a sachet of desiccant in the box itself, but it doesn't help in an unsealed

These are the first 'old' calipers I've owned so far with fancy electronic cheap ones (but good - PCB printing is very accurate). I ordered Big Horn 19053 (India) and received CMT 30078 (China). Not sure how it happened, when I bought from Revain's Warehouse Deals there was a nice sticker on the box saying it was tested by them. I was going to return them but after reading some other reviews it seemed like the only thing I really missed was erasing the blank line before use. I can live with it. I have to say I wasn't expecting much for the price but I expected them to be better than these. I was initially excited when these spring saddles arrived. They were (thankfully) packed in airtight plastic bags and lubricated with plain old rancid machine oil to keep the cheap steel from rusting in transit. But they were even dirtier than they looked. Bought these primarily to check the alignment of the table saw with the guide bar. Generally useful tools.
