. The calipers are made in India and coated with a petroleum based coating which I believe prevents corrosion. The coating can be removed with white spirit. I also put a drop of machine oil on the spring pivot and set screw. You must check the function of each caliper. One of the three calipers in my set would not open. The caliper would continue to get stuck on the set screw and suddenly open without warning, making it difficult and dangerous to use. I reported this to Revain and was promptly sent a replacement set that works as expected. The spring is very firm and will give you a good workout when trying to close the calipers. A tight spring also makes fine tuning more difficult. These are not precision calipers, but they are perfectly adequate for my needs - measuring diameter and thickness on lathes. The price is good for what you get.
