Make sure the seal is in place.
I use the oil filter plug (T-Top) to remove the old filter and install the new one without mess. I rotated the filter and it wasn't good, it turned out that the filter gasket was left on the filter plug and only the oil I wiped on the gasket was holding it. I've never had a filter gasket fall out with a plug, next time I'll look for a loose gasket. The filters themselves are ok, just a curiosity.
