Definitely does what I need. Somehow I thought/hoped the shelf would be wider - maybe deeper but you can't have that and a stand that supports a 13" laptop I guess. Definitely not disappointed! I use a keyboard and mouse tray and now my table has 3 tiers instead of two. I don't understand people getting this for their desk and then complaining that their laptop is too big for their hands lol, it suits my little fast track but not my mbox pro 3 which is a bit over the top. It's just not a very deep shelf. Place something under the shelf unless it has a large gap or won't fit between the legs, which have a sloping vertical edge.
