There is an adhesive sheet on the suction cup itself that will stick to any speck of dust or hair. The sticky film on the suction cup loosened at the edges upon arrival and has been slowly deteriorating ever since. The suction cup itself is very weak; I haven't even tried attaching it to a vertical surface, but even when using it on a perfectly flat horizontal surface, the suction power holds the weight of my phone for about 30 minutes before it slowly pulls back, stops sucking, and then falls off. Now this is completely useless as the part on the opposite end of the knob that controls the rotation of the hand holding the phone has fallen off allowing me to turn the knob but it no longer tightens/snaps to upright stay. A complete waste of money - if I can't get this thing to work even on a flat, stationary surface indoors, it will NEVER work on your car's dashboard/windshield etc.
