I wanted to see if these Retevis would work better than my Uniden FRS radios which require a 2/3 channel FCC license. I tested it in a rural area with lots of trees and lots of hills up to 800 feet high. I like Retravis better. This is slightly larger than typical FRS radios. More durable to grip and has much better battery life. Estimated standby/limited usage time of 10 days is approximately 10 days longer than Unidens. The range is also slightly better. From my house I can get a good signal with both radios in a metal building 600 meters away. Maximum transfer from home to my car, over hills etc is about 1-1.5 miles, depending on how far I'm over the hill. I'm sure with both radios out of the house I would comfortably drive 1.5 miles. On the flat, 2-3 miles is probably a reasonable expectation. With Uniden I go about 1 mile before the audio messes up. On the Retevis, the sound quality is much better at any distance. Voices sound crystal clear. I suspect it has to do with Retevis' blanking setting, while Uniden has no blanking function. Retevis is easier to use and properly configured right out of the box. I bought a programming cable but haven't really found the need to reprogram anything yet. All in all I paid $205 for an "like new" set of 6 which I think is a fair price for the price.
