Review on 🎧 Enhance Your Audio Experience with HiFiBerry DAC2 Pro by Michael Jenkins

Pi = Great Streamer -- This DAC = just OK

I bought this DAC to try and build a cheap Roon endpoint. I'm a bit disappointed. I have another Pi that I connected an iFi Zen DAC to and the sound is incredible for small bookshelf speakers in the bedroom. I was hoping it would sound similar and have the benefit of a cheaper and smaller form factor, but I didn't. At first I was hoping to connect to an old B&W A5 speaker to replace the crappy AirPlay. There was so much noise from the whole facility that it just didn't work. I tried my secondary system and most of the noise was gone, but the audio sounded better with AirPlay built into the Apple TV. As this is a computer part I don't think I can return it but I would happily do so. I think the Pi is great for the Roon, but would prefer to connect it via USB to a decent DAC (iFi Zen is insanely good bang for the buck). I can sync more $$$ into this little device and add an iFi power supply as I think it makes little difference but still a lot of money being invested in what is so-so. UPDATE: This caused a lot of pops. It was almost as if it had to do with frequency. When a heavy bass note was played, pops were produced instead of a bass note.

Pros
  • Connects directly to Raspberry Pi, no extra cables required
Cons
  • No instructions
