I bought two of these bowls. I like the textured surface. As a result, the bowls are very comfortable to hold. The bottoms are smooth so you don't have to worry about them scratching the table. While each cup can hold 20 ounces of liquid when filled to the brim, in reality the bowls cannot hold more than 12-16 ounces of liquid when in use. Of course, if you actually use this bowl as a chawan, you'll never reach those highs. The bowls don't have that fun, unique, little artisanal appeal that I expect from a chawan, so I don't use them for that purpose. I use them to serve soups, muesli and puddings. They are perfect for that.
