I'm a network engineer. My laptop (like many others) does not have a hardware serial port. This device turns your USB port into a serial port that works flawlessly to connect to Cisco routers, switches, and firewalls. In Windows 8 and 8.1, the drivers for this device will only work if you have a specific chipset. It drove me crazy until I found out what it was. My boss had several cheap adapters that never worked properly. It was just the wrong chipset. Don't buy those cheap "made in China" adapters if you don't like throwing money away. This device works as intended. I've used it several times and every time with success! UPDATE March 2017: The adapter still works great as always. I actually left it with a customer on Sunday after setting up some new Cisco switches as they mentioned the need for it. I came here without hesitation and ordered more!
