Doesn't work as advertised (or doesn't work at all)

I had to wait a week to write a review on this product so I could do it for logic and not hassle. I bought this product with the intention of making a box or docking box that I made for my son's school band. For the record, I've been working with wood in my home business for about 15 years, hand crafting both boxtails and dovetails. I read other reviews and watched a few videos and then bought the product thinking I was getting a well made product that would help me do dovetails much faster than I could by hand. I was wrong. First I tried clutches. The instructions on the packaging state that box couplers are a viable way to use this product. The instructions are wrong. I didn't have a template nozzle handy so I decided to use the bearings from the dovetail nozzle that came with the kit. Invested in a jig drill in the shop. I tried making box joints on a few handy patterns, but they just didn't work. I've tried 5 or 6 times and made a dusty mess with no success. I searched the internet for videos. to see if anyone else has tried box clutches but couldn't find any. I think it's because it doesn't work. As a side note, the instructions say you must add a 1/4" shim up front for the couplers to work. Why isn't the shim included?! Although I guess it doesn't matter because it's not possible to align anyway the joints. So I regrouped and decided to continue with the dovetail joints. That's where the product should be at its best, right? Firstly, what they give you with the packaging isn't good. It's not good enough sharp and after after practicing a few times one of the teeth broke off at the bottom. So back to the shop to buy another bit, this time a dovetail bit.The new router bit (Bosch) was great and the cuts were pretty clean even in plywood.Only one Problem: the dovetails didn't match No matter what I tried Raise stroke, lower stroke, move slower, move faster, different routers, stand on one foot and chewing gum mmi chew whatever i'm probo wave. I watched online videos a few more times. I have no idea what magic they used to make this thing "work" in the video, but mine didn't line up. Eventually I gave up and did the stitches on my table saw. I've spent 7 hours of my life that I can never get back, $46 on this product, another $40 on cutters I shouldn't have needed, and gone through a lot of great scrap wood only to find this product defective and not working as advertised (and therefore not working at all).

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Nothing here
