Review on πŸ” Optimized for SEO: Grumbacher Jumbo Vine Charcoal, Medium, Dark Grey, 1 Pack (V9) by Kristen Reid

Large format charcoal for large scale work

First of all I have to say that I am pleased with this charcoal. It is large and quite dark in color for a vine. I mainly use this charcoal in the early stages of drawing portraits and figures. Physically, it has the expected porous charcoal texture and low density, as expected. They perform exactly as I would expect from grape charcoal and give a slightly darker line that I'm used to. The larger size encourages gestural strokes and, when the end points to a wedge, allows for a wide range of stroke widths and markings. Like most grape kale, it is quite crumbly and easily smeared and rubbed off. In terms of ease of use, it is similar to medium/soft charcoal but larger. Basically, I'm happy with the charcoal. It offers the flexibility and smooth handling characteristics of grape charcoal in a large form factor.

Pros
  • Grumbacher uses high quality grapes to produce a rich, blendable and easy to set charcoal
Cons
  • High price
