It amazes me how some small appliances like microwaves break on cue just after the ONE YEAR warranty has expired. The first died after a little over a year of use and I told myself I was lucky. So I replaced it with the same model ($220) and over a year later that month (without touching it) it suddenly started counting down. Power level fast/random and beeps loudly. And repairs are about the same or more than new purchases, making it scrap. (If it's unplugged for a while and then plugged back in, it works for a moment, but then returns to the performance frenzy.) Good news; Great microwave as long as it works. The Bad News; doesn't work very long. My fault is that I didn't purchase the extended warranty. Remember the days when consumer electronics were used for years until they became part of the family? And when he died, there was sorrow. (Sigh) Unfortunately, the "extended warranty" industry has exploded due to the dramatic decline in the quality of manufactured electronics (and industrial products in general). Also, some of these extended warranties are written in such salacious legal language. But this is another story.
