For a general application, my husband expects the three most important things from a stainless steel locknut: 1) the threads are tapped correctly and within tolerances; 2) the lock nut is not loosened; and 3) that they do not rust. Although he didn't test all 50, a sample of 10 of them started easily with a standard 1/4" bolt and got stuck when the bolt hit the nylon insert. For a simple corrosion test, he had one submerged in water. in a cup of plain water; After sitting alone for a week, he could see no sign of rust. Of course, the tests he's run aren't lab-level, but they've confirmed to his satisfaction that they work well for non-specialized applications and offer pretty good value for money.
