This coffee maker is a less expensive type of coffee maker, it uses plastic instead of glass and lacks the more expensive hard metal filters found in my best cold brew coffee maker. . However, what really impresses me is that the filter opens at the bottom to clean the floors. Taking everything apart is a bit fiddly, and if you want to store your coffee in a container you'll have to remove the lid and screw it back on after removing the filter. You then unscrew the cap at the bottom of the filter — I suggest holding it over the compost bin as you do this — and you can then use a small long-handled spatula, a spoon, or even a table knife to squeeze out the grounds. You should be able to remove most of the grounds, including what's stuck to the edges, which is very difficult with my other cold brew filters. Remember that you have to use coarse grains in these devices. It takes quite a bit of ground coffee beans to fill the filter almost to the brim. However, it makes a lot of brew. If you pour water before inserting the filter, be sure to leave some space at the top as the ground coffee will obviously displace some of the water. You don't want it to overflow. If during the installation of the filter you find that there is too much water, you can always stop, get some water and start again. After a while you will have a good eye to accurately determine the amount of water needed. Plan to refrigerate the container for at least 24 hours or even longer. Since I dilute coffee almost 50/50 with milk, it's usually enough for a week's work. If you've never tried a cold drink before, you might get hooked since it's so mild and acid-free. I have found that I need more than one of these because I want one at work and at least one at home. I might want to start a new one when the one in my fridge runs out. This way I don't have to wait for my next coffee brew to be "fixed". Because it's plastic and a less durable metal filter, I give it four stars instead of five, but these characteristics don't usually detract from the quality of the coffee. This is a great introduction to cold beer and I hope other product designers will embrace the removable filter base too!
