Review on Garmin Edge Explore - Advanced Touring Bike Computer with Connected Features, 010-02029-00 by Andrew Dinelli

Revainrating 2 out of 5

No barometric altimeter so no difficulty data field

I had one of the original Edge Explore units and it was a quality unit. Unfortunately it was apparently NOT waterproof so after a walk in some rain it stopped working. I went back to Revain and bought the new version. Unfortunately, the new version is supposed to be waterproof, but it was definitely cheaper. I attributed it to cost cutting, but the device seemed to work well so I went with it. Fast forward to the first trip where I realized I needed to add some missing data fields to the screens. When I did this after the ride, I found that there was EVERYWHERE the "score" I had on the old Explore and previous Garmins I used. I contacted support who told me "that's in the specs" (as if I knew in advance which component would indicate the lack of the score reporting feature). Apparently ALL bike Garmins EXCEPT this one have this component: a barometric altimeter. I suspect they decided that people who travel just don't need or want to know how high the mountain they are climbing is. So they took what was once a good device and turned it into their budget model, removing components and making it cheaper to build. Luckily I still had a day in the return window so it's back, but be aware it may not have everything Edge Explore once had. I'm giving it two stars instead of one because the device seemed to work fine except that it didn't have any critical hardware.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Slightly torn
