I have a betta in a 1.5 gallon aquarium on my desk. I'm in California so it never gets cold here, but the heat is turned off at night and on weekends. His water got too cold. I bought the 7.5W version based on some reviews. This heating appears to be intermittent. Sometimes the water is perfect, sometimes a little chilly but not cold. The info that came with the device didn't say anything about turning it on and off, so I don't know if that's normal. My Betta Kevin seems to be doing fine. I have his bowl full of pathos and he likes it. He seems to be a lot more active since I added a heater. I took it home for the Christmas holidays and my cat was too interested (as you can see in the photo). But no worry. We put him in a safe place. The photo clearly shows the bowl and Kevin. It's back on my desktop. He has been there for over a year so feels good and remains healthy. Based on the information I've read here, I'll probably turn off the heater and remove it as soon as it gets warmer. It sits at the bottom of the bowl and I have a fist-sized rock on it to hold it. Most of it is exposed to water, which is probably why it heats up so well.
